Formed in 1963, The Yardbirds first became known as the house band at the legendary Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, a role they took on after replacing the Rolling Stones. Initially a Blues based group, The Yardbirds featured Eric Clapton for their first few singles before the commercial success of the Graham Gouldman penned “For your Love” meant he left the group to john another Blues band John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers.
Clapton’s replacement in the Yardbirds was Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. More hits followed such as “Heart full of soul”, “Shape of Things”, “Evil hearted you” & Bo Diddley’s “I’m a Man”. The Yardbirds expanded the range of the electric guitar, experimenting with feedback, sustain and fuzztone unknowingly laying down the groundwork for rock guitar as we know it.
