Michael Rother To Celebrate 40th Anniversary Of ‘Sterntaler’ At London Show

*Rother will perform career-spanning set including material by NEU! and Harmonia plus acclaimed second solo record ‘Sterntaler’ in full*

Michael Rother will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his seminal album ‘Sterntaler’ with a concert at Under the Bridge in West London on Friday April 5th 2019. Joined by Hans Lampe on drums and Franz Bargmann on guitar, Rother will perform his acclaimed second solo record ‘Sterntaler’ in full alongside a selection of cuts from his recordings with NEU! and Harmonia.

“Rother set out with Sterntaler to create true electronic rock music — even if what he came up with was the first real ambient trance music.” review

‘Solo’, a new boxset featuring Rother’s first four solo projects, will be released via Groenland next month.

A member of Kraftwerk in 1971, Rother went on to form NEU! (with Klaus Dinger) and Harmonia (with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius of Cluster) before releasing nine solo albums. A key figure of the innovative krautrock music scene that originated from Germany in the early 1970s, Rother’s music has been inspirational for generations of musicians including David Bowie, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, DEVO, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, U2, Autechre, Radiohead, Primal Scream, John Frusciante and many more.

Thurston Moore started Sonic Youth in 1980. Since then Thurston Moore
has been at the forefront of the alternative rock scene since that particular
sobriquet was first used to signify any music that challenged and defied the
mainstream standard. With Sonic Youth, Moore turned on an entire
generation to the value of experimentation in rock n roll – from its inspiration
on a nascent Nirvana, to Sonic Youth’s own Daydream Nation album being
chosen by the US Library of Congress for historical preservation in the
National Recording Registry in 2006. Thurston records and performs in a
cavalcade of disciplines ranging from free improvisation to acoustic
composition to black/white metal/noise disruption. He has worked with Yoko
Ono, John Zorn, David Toop, Cecil Taylor, Faust, Glenn Branca and many
others. His residency at the Louvre in Paris included collaborations with
Irmin Schmidt of CAN. Alongside his various activities in the musical world,
he is involved with publishing and poetry, and teaches writing at Naropa
University, Boulder CO, a school founded by Allen Ginsberg and Anne
Waldman in 1974. Thurston also teaches music at The Rhythmic Music
Conservatory (Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium) in Copenhagen.

Presently he performs and records solo, with various ensembles and in his
own band, The Thurston Moore Group (with mbv’s Deb Googe, Steve
Shelley & James Sedwards). In 2014, the band released The Best Day
which critics described as “optimistic and sun-drenched in beauty” and
“[has] experimental attitude dovetailed with instantly accessible pop
melodies.” The Best Day was a record defined by positivity and radical love.

6 time Snooker World Champion, Steve Davis will be gracing the decks at Under the Bridge for an Afterparty DJ set with his NTS Radio co-resident, Gong’s Kavus Torabi!

***Steve Davis***
Steve Davis was the most successful professional Snooker Player of the 1980’s, winning a total of 28 major ranking events including 6 World Championships. In recent years his involvement in snooker has been limited mainly to TV punditry, which has given him far more time to indulge in his musical hobby, namely collecting left field music from around the globe and presenting a weekly Radio show on PhoenixFM and monthly residency on NTS Radio with Kavus Torabi. His favourite band is Magma – at the end of the 80’s he brought them to London for a series of shows. His musical tastes range from quality 70’s Prog, Canterbury and Zeuhl through to modern day Rock in Opposition and Avant-Progressive and now further into left-field electronica and IDM.

***Kavus Torabi***
Kavus Torabi is an experimental/ psychedelic musician with a long history in the field. He fronts his own band, Knifeworld and plays in Gong, Guapo and was previously a member of the clad Cardiacs.

He runs the boutique record label, Believers Roast, has collaborated with a wide range of left-field artists and co-presents The Interesting Alternative Show and Fire Shuffle shows with Steve Davis, shows championing new, experimental, avant-garde, far out, underground, electronic, pop, folk, psych, rock and classical music.

Recently Michael Rother took a tour around Under the Bridge’s photo gallery to reminisce on photos of Cream, Mark E. Smith (The Fall), and David Bowie. Michael also shared stories on his early work with Kraftwerk and collaberating with John Frusciante (ex-Red Hot Chilli Peppers).
